Summer flutterings

Every day we’ve walked past some beautiful Budlea bushes on our way to school and the park..the children love the colour and scent of these shrubs they smell like honey…I told them that they are the butterflies favourite flower…because the nectar is so sweet…

Sometime’s inspiration comes from unlikely places…the other day I was in the charity shop and found a couple of lovely vintage Ladybirds books… one of them was one I remembered owning when I  a little girl called ‘Butterflies, Moths and other insects’…so I brought them more for nostalgia than anything else…

The illustrations are so beautiful…

And I thought about the long hot summers of my childhood in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s…

A few days later I was listening to the radio and heard that, because of the terrible summer our butterfly population is suffering, so I decided to help the butterfly population a tiny bit by growing our own butterflies in a ‘butterfly pavilion’

So I’ve sent off for the pavilion above and some pupa’s and we can watch our butterflies grow and  emerge

Then we can set them free…so our theme this summer is simply Butterflies…we’ll be making lots of different types of butterflies…

We love the Charlie and Lola butterflies…so that will be our first art attempt at wonderful butterflies next week…

So watch this space for more flutterings!
