Our topic for January is
‘Looking after Garden Birds in the Winter’
so last week we made some amazing birdy cakes for the birds to eat in this frosty cold weather….
First of all we collected our ingredients together…paper cups…wild bird seed…lard…string and sticks
Then we poured the seed into a big bowl…its so lovely to run the tiny seeds through your hands…
Next we add the melted lard carefully into the bowl and mix the seeds into the liquid…it is interesting to see how the solid lard becomes liquid when we heat it up…
A tricky bit next…putting the mixture into the cups…we mustn’t forget to thread the string through the top…and poke the twig through…
We needed to put the cakes in the fridge to harden overnight…the next day we carefully cut the cups away and the birdy cake is revealed ;0)
A feast for our feathered friends!
